Ombudsman : I think the practice of so-called coordinators is very obsolete

I think the practice of so-called coordinators is very obsolete and backs our electoral environment off. I urge all political parties, especially the ruling party, not to use the similar methods, Public Defender Nino Lomjaria said in response to the questions asked after submitting the report at the Human Rights Committee of the Parliament on Monday. According to her, it’s time for us to grow up in terms of political culture. The Ombudsman talked about several factors, including the possible bribery of the voters, that prevent holding the election in a better environment. The by-election [held on May 19] is not included in this report, but I have assesses these elections. I think that the major problem in the election remain the forms pressure and the use of administrative resources. I think that existence of the institutes of coordinators is particularly problematic, since, in the Georgian reality, they do not have the function of collecting the information for a political party. They are often used for making pressure. The public has a feeling that their will is controlled. Therefore, I think this is an obsolete practice and backs our electoral environment off. I urge all political parties, especially the ruling party, not to use the similar methods and maybe, it’s time for us to grow up in terms of political culture. I think that vote buying remains another major problem, the Ombudsman said. source: IPN/ interpressnews.ge
