The “difficult” security, human rights and humanitarian situation in the Russian-occupied regions of Georgia was discussed on Thursday in a meeting between the Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and Bettina Patricia Boughani, the newly appointed Head of the European Union Monitoring Mission.
The meeting highlighted the “crucial” role of the Mission in terms of implementation of the August 2008 ceasefire agreement that ended the war between Russia and Georgia, as well as peaceful resolution of the conflict and prevention of escalation, the Government Administration said.
Kobakhidze noted it was “important to use all available tools” to ensure access for the Mission by its mandate, and further vowed his Government was “ready to firmly continue cooperation” with the EU body, the only international mechanism on the ground.
The Prime Minister also welcomed the extension of the Mission's mandate until December 2024.
