Today, in the European Parliament, a vote will be held on the resolution regarding the draft law on "foreign agents" in Georgia. Information about this is published on the official website of the European Parliament.
In particular, the debate on the draft resolution "On attempts to reintroduce the law of foreign agents in Georgia and its restrictions on civil society" was held in the European Parliament on April 23, and the vote on the resolution will be held on April 25.
The author of the summary draft of the main text of the resolution is 40 MEPs from 5 different parties of the European Parliament.
In the summary version of the draft resolution, it is noted that the said draft law violates two of the 9 steps presented to Georgia by the European Commission, namely Step 1 (which involves fighting disinformation directed against the European Union and its values) and Step 9 (which involves ensuring the freedom of civil society to act).
It is noted that the European Union expects Georgia, as a candidate country, to comply with the Association Agreement and other international obligations, including the recommendations issued by the European Commission on November 8, 2023. It is also noted that the European Council decided to grant Georgia candidate status only on the basis that Tbilisi would take these steps.
In addition, the project states that in previous resolutions, the European Parliament issued calls to reduce the destructive role of oligarchic interests in the politics and economy of Georgia, which was manifested in the politically motivated persecution of journalists and political opponents, in particular, the former president, Mikheil Saakashvili, whose release on humanitarian grounds the European Parliament demanded.
According to the text of the draft resolution, the draft law on "foreign agents" is against the values and democratic principles of the European Union, against Georgia's EU membership ambitions, damages Georgia's international reputation and endangers the country's Euro-Atlantic aspirations.
It is also noted that the negotiations on Georgia's accession to the European Union should not be opened until the said draft law is part of the country's legal order.
