About 1.27 million Georgian citizens aged 15 and above made 1.59 million monthly visits within the country in 2023 with a total expenditure amounting to ₾278 million ($104.52), the National Statistics Office of Georgia said on Thursday.
The monthly average number of visitors increased by 6.2 percent, while the number of visits increased by 17.5 percent year-on-year, the Office added.
The majority of the visits came on the Georgian capital city of Tbilisi with an average of 368,200 trips per month, and the western Imereti region with 342,600.
The top reasons given for internal travel were:
Visiting friends/relatives – 47.2%
Shopping – 17.6%
Holiday/leisure – 11%
Visiting another property (summer cottage, house, etc.) – 9.6%
Health and medical care – 8.5%
Business or professional trips – 2.6%
The body also said 34.6 percent of the visitors were residents of Tbilisi, 16.9 percent resided in Imereti, Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti regions, and 9.6 percent in Kvemo Kartli region.
