Otar Shamugia, the Minister of Agriculture and Environment Protection of Georgia, on Friday said the body expected the number of visitors to protected areas of the country to increase “even further” this year.

The Minister also noted new protected areas were established every year in the country.

Currently, active work is underway on expansion of the existing protected area in Racha and creation of new protected areas in Samegrelo and Zemo Svaneti [regions]. We have already started work in the Tbilisi National Park”, he said.
Shamugia emphasised the importance of offering visitors “orderly and organised infrastructure” at protected areas, and said cooperation with the Swedish Development Agency involved spending ₾7.20 million ($2.65mln) for the purpose.

He added infrastructural works were planned to be implemented in around 10 locations this year.
