A new international airport in Tbilisi will be built in Vaziani, which will be designed for 18 million passengers, - Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze announced this in his annual report to the Parliament.

According to the head of the government, airports are of great importance for the development of the country's transit function.

"Airports are very important for the development of connectivity and transit function. We had an in-depth discussion regarding the issue of Tbilisi International Airport. Two alternative versions were considered - the expansion of the existing airport, or the construction of a completely new airport. In the end, the Government of Georgia, after a discussion at the Economic Council, decided on the construction of a completely new international airport. Tbilisi's new international airport will be built in Vaziani. The capacity of the current airport is 4 million passengers and the new airport, after the project is fully completed, will have a capacity of 18 million passengers. The rate of growth of passenger flows for the following years has been calculated and everything indicates that the essential expansion of the airport is extremely important and this is what this new mega-project, which will be implemented in this direction, will be dedicated to," said the Prime Minister.

According to Irakli Kobakhidze, new projects have already been developed for Telavi and Mestia airports.

"Also, work is underway to create a new general plan for Kutaisi Airport. We want to build a new terminal. Construction works will start this year and will be completed in 2026. Also, the works of expanding the parking lot have already been completed. The number of places has increased to 700. The development of Telavi and Mestia airports is also important. New projects and modern terminals for both airports have already been developed. Construction works on new infrastructure in the Telavi airport terminal will start this year. It will be completed approximately ten months after the signing of the contract. The construction of the new terminal at the Mestia airport is planned to start this year and be completed in 2025," said the Prime Minister.
